God luck to you, all of what Shmamy said is great advice, most of the time you design what the client likes, or target audience.

I have never tried to make a living with my work. Only because I assumed (*gasp*) no one would be interested in my style. I recently took that big step and decided to open up shop.

As I've said before, it's very possible to make a very good living being an artist. But it's not a profession for lazy, unmotivated people who think the world owes them a living.

Now I am a starving artist, and laugh every time I scrape up $ for paints and supplies, foregoing steak for just potatoes, life without art wouldn't be much of a life.

I have a random Question. Do any of us actually make money with our art. I love to draw, and wish I could just make enough to survive doing it. Just wondering if Im completely alone on this?

Most of these contests are more about popularity among friends than anything else- not to put anything down- but it puts a twist on industry standards!
