The website designing skills will haunt me... I need to know how to do that.

Carpe diem Deano. Get out of the house, and bring your sketch pad. Many's the time restaurant owners saw me sketching people for practice and traded my meal for those sketches.

5. and bottom line... Deano, we all think we've sunk to the bottom at some point in life. Trust me, it's a matter of perspective. At my age, just waking up gives me an opportunity to better myself.

People say to get exposure. I might have to work for nothing somewhere as an intern or donate like you did. No one wants to pay for art unless they know it will "sell their product."

Hey Robert, could you give me any insight about how to break into the industry with my minimal bg?

artistfors...

... you are so fortunate to have learned what it took me a decade or more to figure out by trial and error...

I never once had parents who would let me do whatever i wanted to do. They've been controlling, and have said I've made the wrong decision getting into art. I don't have my own car, and I'm almost stuck at my house each and every day.

3. After Vietnam, I refused the GI Bill and got loans for college which took many years to repay. 4. I have never once taken an art lesson or attended a class on art.

1. Deano, you still can afford internet (or are using the public library's). 2. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, my folks were considered very poor.

everything's my fault you could say, but finding a steady position somewhere at a design firm seems impossible at the moment, especially for ambitious young designers such as myself.

There are no best graphic designs; only more effective and less effective.

Robert, no offense, I'm just being ignorant. I like that you have much experience that you've been willing to share, but you don't know how hard it is the way I'm living NOW.

I tried to give you the benefit of my experience, but I sense an attitude. Too damn busy to put up with that...

Deano...moneybags??? show a little respect here young man. I've worked my ass off making what I do and believe me there were months when I was young when peanut butter on a spoon was a dinner.

It's a tough industry. Find a niche and go for it. Develop a style and keep at it. Get some exposure, believe in youself and your ablilites and never stop learning and striving to get better.

LOL Grapphicdeano do you need an ego boost? I like your work, and think you have just as much of a chance of winning and making a living at this as any of us.

Who donated to me? Thanks, any little bit is good. Unlike most of you on here, I don't have a job (therefore no income and I don't collect). If I could somehow get to $20 fbs I'd love to get that Amazon gift card.

for instance, last year I donated a piece to PBS for an auction... raised $13,000 during the bidding war. Guess what I ask for a 16 x 20 now? comprende?

artistfors...
2/5/2009 2:24 PM
and (2) now that a piece has been auctioned, you come under the microscope of auctioneers who actually determine what you can ask for an individual piece.

artistfors...
2/5/2009 2:23 PM
and to most importantly, to the charities. Now that you're out there, donate art for silent auctions. which allows you two venues for more work (1) the ones who were underbid...
