Interview with Joe Gleese
INCUPRO: Recently we caught up with Joe Gleese, our featured Artist of the month Artist of the Month of August on INC SPOT. First I would like to congradulate you on your ASCAP demo. Lets get started.
INCUPRO:When did you start playing music?
JOE GLEESE: In 1944.
INCUPRO:. What instruments do you play?
JOE GLEESE: I Play Piano.
INCUPRO: What was the first tune(s) you learned?
JOE GLEESE: It was so long ago I can't remember.
INCUPRO:You know co ...moreme to think of it I really don't remember the first tunes I learned either Who are your band mates , and are they part of the writing process?
JOE GLEESE : Marguerite Bourgeois has a master's degree in French and teaches French at St. Xavier High School in the city of Wyoming here in the greater Cincinnati area. Her mom and dad composed the French verse to "ONE DE IRE." In 2003, pianist and arranger, Erwin Stuckey, received his master's degree in music here at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. Bassist hil Bowden and drummer Dan Dorff also attended CCM here at U.C. Trombonist Scott Forney and guitarist Karl Kerfoot recently received their degree in music here at CCM.
INCUPRO:You can tell by your songs, everyone in your productions are well trained. Is your family musical?
JOE GLEESE: My dad was an orchestra leader. He played clarinet, sax, and sang in his orchestra. He also played violin. My mom played piano and sang in my dad's orchestra.
INCUPRO: So the whole family is musical. If you have any recordings of them I sure would like to hear them? Which famous musicians do you admire?
JOE GLEESE: I am a great admirer of pianist Frankie Carle, several other big band leaders, and several singers, including Tony Bennett, Perry Como, Doris Day, Joni James, Diana Krall, atti Page, and Frank Sinatra, to name just a few. If you like, I'd be very happy to email to you as attachments some of their great recordings for your listening pleasure, Robert! I believe that exposure to their music was essential to my development as a romantic ballad composer. .
INCUPRO: I do have some of their recordings, and I have vintage Rat Pack videos as well. Yea they are truely the greats Which famous musicians have you learned from?
JOE GLEESE: Not only all that I mentioned above, but many others as well. To many to list.
INCUPRO: Describe your first instrument. Other instruments.
JOE GLEESE: I began instruction under a classical pianist in my home town of Waynesboro, Virginia, in 1944, the year I turned only 8 years old on June 17th. Later, in 1957 and 1958, I studied popular piano at the Don Warner popular piano music studio in my birthplace, Richmond, Virginia, before returning to the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia, in September, 1958, to finish my bachelor's degree in German and ancient Greek, in June, 1960. At Waynesboro (Virginia) High School I briefly studied bass and clarinet, but I soon stopped when I realized I just wasn't taking to those instruments.
INCUPRO:What an amazing journey thay must have been. What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
JOE GLEESE: I have fond memories of beginning to learn Frankie Carle piano arrangements at age 12 through my mom. I was delighted and greatly honored when Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Bourgeois took an interest in my compositions and set "ONE DESIRE" into French verse here in Cincinnati. Later, I was delighted and greatly honored again when Dr. Charles Wynne set "ONE DESIRE" into Spanish verse, again here in Cincinnati. Finally, I must most gratefully acknowledge all the help I received from Marshall Robbins, in Hollywood, California, at Commander Publications, founded by famous songwriter and fine vocalist, Johnny Mercer.
INCUPRO:. Were you influenced by old records & tapes? Which ones?
JOE GLEESE: Yes. Especially old recordings by Frankie Carle, other big band leaders, and vocalists such as those I mentioned above.
INCUPRO: Do you get nervous before a performance ?
JOE GLEESE: I don't play enough piano to perform in public.
INCUPRO: What advice would you give to beginners who are nervous.
Just remember that your performance doesn't have to be perfect. Many imperfections go totally unnoticed by the average listener.
INCUPRO:. That is a professional answer Do you teach music?
JOE GLEESE: Only when someone shows an interest, and I do not charge.
INCUPRO: Joe that is so cool. Any thing else you would like to add?
JOE GLEESE: I am so greatly honored by your wonderful compliments and interest in my compositions. Please feel free to email me if you have any additional questions. Again, thanks a million!
INCUPRO: Thank you Joe for giving us this short journey, And for your inspiring music.Congradulations again. Now please give joegleese music a listen incupro.gif less |
