| About Me: |
“All of my life, singing has been my therapy and best friend. Every one of my memories has had a soundtrack streaming beneath it… I can’t help it. Even in silence, I see the notes and hear the songs.” So says Jenesis regarding the origins of her astonishing musical talent. With a dynamic, utterly distinctive blend of breathtaking rhythm & blues, fiery funk, smoky jazz and roof-raising gospel inflections, this doe-eyed Detroit native delivers original music with a vocal prowess that both honors t ...morehe legacy and advances the cause of true soul music. As repeatedly stated by former MTV Executive Tanya Hiedelberg-Yopp, “A voice this honest and heaven-sent hasn't been heard in a long time. Jenesis is the best thing to come out of Detroit for the last ten years.” “Souled Out”, her stunning debut release on OneSoul Records, provides irrefutable proof that Jenesis is one of the brightest and most promising new arrivals on the contemporary music scene. “The word soul, by definition is one’s mind, will and emotions”, Jenesis asserts, “My music is highly introspective, honestly exploring the good, the bad, and the ugly.” Jenesis is classically trained in vocal music and piano, and has been performing and competing since she was nine years old. Having embraced and performed a vast array of genres including jazz, trip hop, hip hop, blues and rock, her sound is delightfully eclectic and unique. “I can’t pinpoint exactly how I started singing”, she admits. “My mother said that I would sing myself to sleep as a baby. I started Montessori schools when I was three, and in preschool they put me in a Christmas Cantata. They gave me a solo, and I‘ve been up-front and center ever since. The teachers nurtured my keen ear, and encouraged my creativity. Add in the fact that my parents enrolled me in vocal lessons, I guess it was just written in the stars,” she laughs. “One day, in third grade, we had to create a poem about a month, I picked October. After I wrote it, I felt like I had so much more to say, so I wrote poems about the other eleven months as well. Three of them were published. For me, writing came just as easily as singing.” That prolificacy has served Jenesis well indeed, as she wrote all twenty tracks on “Souled Out”, an album which one die hard fan describes as “…a sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-wrenching audio movie.” The album was written to tell a story about a tumultuous romance. It candidly moves through the mind, life and interactions of a woman who is struggling to love a man who has repeatedly been unfaithful and emotionally obtuse. “I have four mentors thus far”, Jenesis reveals, “and each one of them has emphasized the importance of storytelling. They taught me that music, frankly written and sung with an open heart, is embraced and treasured by those fortunate enough to hear it. I also wanted to tap into the true roots of Soul and R&B, so I dug deep. I studied a wide range of musical styles, eras and artists, but I focused on Phyllis Hyman, Billie Holiday, Rachelle Ferrell, and Esther Phillips. These are four women that I felt that my voice favored. Plus, they knew how to tell one hell of a story.” She continues, “Soul music sympathizes, heals, uplifts, and celebrates life’s ebb and flow. It can also take away a lot of pain and sadness. When I sing, I’m pouring my soul out on the floor, hoping that it touches someone, and heals me. That’s the beautiful thing about Soul music. In its sincerity, it changes lives.” That “pouring” was wrapped around the enduring values of such musical essentials as forthright lyrics, captivating melodies and passionate performances, all contained in a full-voiced package that wasn't afraid to give heart and soul to each and every word and note. It was that courage that quickly garnered the attention of OneSoul Records CEO and lead singer of the popular Reggae/Rock band Outlaw Nation, Christian Simeon. "I heard her voice, saw the passionate way she delivered a song and knew that I wanted to work with her," stated Simeon. Jenesis will be touring with Outlaw Nation starting in January 2009. In August 2008 Jenesis’ label Jahzion Entertainment (a conflation of her two children’s names, Elijah (age 8), and Zion, (who died in 2006 after being diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma)) in association with OneSoul Records released her debut LP, “Souled Out”. When asked what her ultimate goals are, Jenesis is very clear. “I want to make music that is classic, timeless, and cherished because of its integrity. I want to create songs that newlyweds dance to and children are conceived to. I want to make songs that make breakups not hurt so bad, songs that say, ‘Man, I’ve been there and it is greener on the other side’. Ultimately, I want to be a soundtrack to people’s lives. I want to make them laugh, make them happy, make them whole.” With such standout selections as, the title track “Souled Out”, “Medicated”, “Stranger”, and “Not Ready”, “Souled Out” is the tour de force of a young artist who is reaching back to the best and creating timeless music for today and tomorrow. Ladies and gentlemen, Jenesis. less |
