What is a Scratchboard?
It is one of the more rarely used media for the creation of fine art pieces, yet it is capable of more fine detail than any other media. A Scratchboard consists of at least three layers of material. The base is a poster board or Masonite. A layer of white China clay is applied to the base. Finally, a layer of black India ink is applied on top of the clay. An image is etched into the scratchboard using thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of tin ...morey cuts with a knife or other etching tool. My detailed images are carved with an X-acto blade and it is time consuming and requires patience to complete a satisfactory drawing.
